SIX CONSIDERATIONS

What we hold for the circle

A forum that has met for years. A circle of partners. People who already know the hard parts of each other's lives and do not need the preamble. We build the days around that, and leave enough of them empty.

Purpose

Why now. A year that asked a lot. A decision one of you is carrying. Or simply that it has been too long.

Perspective

Somewhere none of you would have chosen alone. Sometimes a person from outside your world who wants nothing from any of you.

Rhythm

Hours together, and hours left alone. The conversation that matters usually arrives late, and never on the first day.

Access

A maker, a custodian, a scholar whose life has little to do with yours. Time with them, not a talk from them.

Privacy

What is said at the table stays there. A house or a wing to yourselves, and nobody passing through who was not invited.

Stewardship

Rooms, tables, movement and meals, settled long before you land. Whoever organised this should get to be in it.

Three settings, three ways to gather

SIGNATURE SETTINGS
The setting follows the purpose of the circle. Three places to begin.

The Strategic Circle

Rooms above the harbour, and dinners that run long. For a circle that wants somewhere handsome to be serious in, and somewhere to stop being serious afterwards.
Regions
Monte Carlo · Kyoto · Beijing
02

The Cultural Circle

A riad you have to yourselves. One table every night, and the courtyard afterwards. Time with the city's cooks and makers, offered rather than arranged around you.
Regions
Marrakech · Palma Mallorca · Luxor
03

The Reflective Circle

Valley walks. Thin air. Evenings by the fire. A slower place, for a circle that sees each other often and still has not had the conversation.
Regions
Punakha · Petra · Pamalican Islands
Our forum has met for eleven years and we have done these badly before, so expectations were not high. Kyoto was different. Rooms were allotted so nobody felt senior. Space was left between the sessions, which sounds obvious and never happens. On the second morning a priest sat with us for an hour in a temple that was closed to everybody else. None of it felt arranged for tourists.
A Founders' Forum, Ten Members
Kyoto
Fourteen partners, three days, and an agenda I was dreading. Most of the real talking ended up happening in the courtyard, which was not the plan at all. Meals appeared, cars appeared, nobody chased us for anything. Fifteen years of organising these and it is the first one I was not working through.
